Took 15 minutes to make a quick and dirty video. Phone clamped to the guitar, spacer capo-clamped under the low E. No measurements, but as I said, it was quick.

You all do what you want. For me measurement and gauging takes about 0% greater time or effort to do in playing position than resting horizontal. Can't for the life of me think of a single reason to set guitars up laying on their backs. But to each their own I guess.

I was wrong about the pitch reference by the way. Was just setting up another guitar, and decided to run it through the tuner to check. Holding the body I pluck a string in playing position, then tilt it flat, back up to playing, flat, etc.

Boy does that needle move up and down a lot more than I was expecting.

Anyway, hopefully the video above is viewable. I didn't intend to publish it publicly, so it's supposed to only be viewable directly through the link provided here.

Of course. When it's on it's back on a neck rest, the string slackens, right? Which will probably vary from guitar to guitar depending on neck stiffness.

I'd really like to see the same thing but on the high e. Did you notice the tuning difference was across all strings or mostly the large ones like I found in my one off quick and dirty?

Let's see.

Maybe a pound of gravity working against the material properties of the wood and 220+ pounds of string tension acting against the gravity only to the degree that it is suspended and angled off the fretboard.

Ya...it's possible.

The higher the action....the less gravity is going to be a factor here.

It would have to actually MATTER for me to break out the math. :)
